Isaac Newton (b. 1643, Kingdom of England) was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, philosopher, theologian and inventor, and a fellow of the Royal Society.
Isaac Newton was born in 1643 in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, at Woolsthorpe Manor. He was educated at The King's School, Grantham, and later at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. His occupations included mathematician, physicist, philosopher, astronomer, theologian, and inventor. He held the positions of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, Warden of the Mint, Master of the Mint, President of the Royal Society, and Member of Parliament for two terms. He was knighted as a Knight Bachelor.
Newton is known for his notable works: Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which describes universal gravitation and the laws of motion; Method of Fluxions, his work on calculus; and Opticks, or a Treatise of the Reflections, Refractions, Inflections and Colours of Light, which explored the nature of light and color. His work fundamentally changed the understanding of the physical world.
Newton was influenced by René Descartes, and through Descartes also influenced Benedictus de Spinoza, John Locke, and Blaise Pascal. He was a student of Isaac Barrow and Benjamin Pulleyn, and his doctoral advisors were Barrow and Pulleyn. His students included Roger Cotes, John Flamsteed, and William Whiston. He influenced Immanuel Kant and James Clerk Maxwell. He is grouped with Albert Einstein as great physicists who changed science, with Galileo Galilei as a predecessor in science and astronomy, with Michael Faraday for influence on electromagnetism, and with Archimedes as an ancient scientist who influenced mechanics.
A conversation with Newton would be rigorous and focused on empirical evidence and mathematical reasoning. He would likely discuss his laws of motion, gravity, and optics, and might engage in theological or philosophical debates. He would be interested in questions about the nature of light, the mechanics of the universe, and the relationship between science and religion.
